The Scottish rock & roll band, Nazareth began in the early 60s as The Shadettes with Dan McCafferty on vocals, Pete Agnew on bass and Darrell Sweet on drums but after the addition of lead guitarist, Manny Charlton in 1968, the band decided they needed a name change and found it in the first line of the song, “The Weight” by The Band … “I pulled into Nazareth.” The band struggled somewhat to get recognition with their first two albums but after teaming up with Roger Glover of Deep Purple as producer, things really started to happen. First came Razamanaz in 1973 with the hugely successful single, “Broken Down Angel.” They became huge in Canada after the release of Loud ‘n’ Proud a year later. The album’s single, “This Flight Tonight” soared up the charts … a song originally written by Joni Mitchell. Nazareth then went on to release a row of now classic albums … the most known being Hair of the Dog which was released in 1975. The North American version included the major hit single, “Love Hurts” originally a hit by the Everly Brothers. Nazareth remained active in the 80s releasing albums that had a slightly more radio-friendly approach. The decade also saw the band release their first official live album, Snaz. Over the last few years, the band has continued their intensive touring still selling out shows worldwide. The current line-up is Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew along with lead guitarist, Jimmy Murrison and drummer, Lee Agnew. Fans and music critics alike describe the current line-up as a mature and yet very refreshing experience. This past February, the band released a new album, The Newz coinciding with their 40th Anniversary World Tour which began at the beginning of the year in Sweden and will include a one-night performance at the Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre in July.
