Academy Award winner Steven Wright is a prototype comedian that many others continually try to follow. Raised in Burlington, Massachusetts, he graduated from Emerson College and soon afterwards landed a gig doing stand-up at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club and Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was in 1982 when Wright got his big break and was booked for his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. The King of Late Night enjoyed Wright’s performance so much he invited him to appear again within a week … a rarity on The Tonight Show. His back-to-back appearances helped put his fledgling career into high gear. The comic soon found himself performing his offbeat routines on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman along with numerous trips back to The Tonight Show. Wright expanded his comedy career to include comedy albums and film and television appearances. His 1986 debut album, I Have A Pony earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1988, he starred in his first HBO special, On Location: Steven Wright and a year later, he was honoured with an Academy Award for “Best Short Film” for his film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings in which he starred and co-wrote. In 1990, he completed his second stand-up special for HBO, Wicker Chairs and Gravity. He has appeared in several feature films including Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993), Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers (1994), The Muse (1999) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). He remains a frequent guest on the late night talk show circuit and as well, he continues touring throughout North America and overseas. Steven Wright will be performing for one show only at Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre in October.
