Ray Sawyer, the spirited, eye-patched lead singer of the group Dr. Hook whose soulful and sometimes comic vocals fronted the band’s breakthrough to international superstar status in the 70’s and 80’s, is definitely a song stylist of the first order and never was it more evident than it is today. Born and raised in Alabama, he got his first job as a professional musician at the age of fourteen playing drums with a local band and soon developed a style that extracted honesty and emotion … the best traits of both country music and R&B. Ray’s trademark eye patch was acquired following a car accident in 1967 which left him without his right eye. It was then in 1968 when he set out for Los Angeles working his way back to New York where the nucleus of Dr. Hook was formed just in time to record the score for the Dustin Hoffman film, Who is Harry Keller man and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me? in 1971. Accumulating a total of sixty gold and platinum records worldwide with Dr. Hook, he has gained the confidence of a seasoned entertainer. Hit singles include “Sylvia’s Mother,” “The Cover of the Rolling Stone,” “Only Sixteen,” “A Little Bit More,” “Sharing the Night Together,” When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman” and “Sexy Eyes.” Since the break-up of the group in 1984, Ray has been touring throughout North America and overseas with a new band which includes his son, Cayce who has been performing with them since he was thirteen years old playing percussion and singing background vocals. Ray’s current style is harder edged and more soulful then his previous country-rock and pop efforts but he still provides an abundance of stage energy, a prankish sense of humor, an unmistakable voice and image along with that unique ability to reflect his good times in good music.
