Influenced by great talents like Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair and the Dirty Dozen Marching Band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a self-described "alternative to retro" with a timeless quality that appeals to all ages. Featuring Scotty Morris (singer/songwriter), Kurt Sodergren (percussion), Dirk Shumaker (string bass), Andy Rowley (saxophone), Glen "the Kid" Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophone, clarinet) and Josh Levy (piano), the band has been touring virtually nonstop, performing on more than 1200 stages around the world. It was in 1989 when Morris decided to launch a three-piece jazz, blues and swing combo. The trio included Sodergren and was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after a fateful meeting with blues guitarist legend, Albert Collins at one of his concerts. “He signed my poster ‘To Scotty, The Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’,” Morris explains. “I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn’t really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me.”Primarily focussing on the swing type of the 40s and 50s, BBVD kicked off the swing revival in the mid-‘90s with two CDs, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and What’chu Want for Christmas? under their own label followed by an appearance in the 1996 film, Swingers which featured the song, “You and Me & The Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby).” They were then signed to a major-label contract with Capitol Records in 1998 leading to the release of the album, Americana Deluxe which featured the singles, “Mr. Pinstripe Suit” and “Go Daddy-O” followed by the release of their next album, This Beautiful Life in 1999. Along with touring throughout North America and across Asia and Europe, BBVD has performed at Super Bowl XXXIII’s halftime show and at the 2006 Capitol One Bowl. The band currently has tour dates scheduled throughout the United States and Canada including a one-night performance at the Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre in May.
