With more than fifty years in the music industry, Paul Anka is one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. Born and raised in Ottawa, Anka knew as a child that he wanted to be a singer and a songwriter. He recorded his first single, “I Confess” at the age of fourteen and when he turned sixteen, he recorded what would be his best known song of all time, “Diana” … a song he wrote that was about his crush on an older high school friend. Released in 1957 on ABC-Paramount, it sold over 10 million copies and launched his career at an international teen idol. Anka soon established himself as a successful artist and songwriter penning his Top 10 US hits, “You Are My Destiny,” “Lonely Boy,” “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” “Puppy Love,” “My Home Town” and “Dance on Little Girl.” It was in 1962 when Johnny Carson made his debut as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” with Anka contributing one of the most recognizable theme songs in television history. In 1969, he wrote “My Way” for Frank Sinatra followed two years later with “She’s A Lady” for Tom Jones. He had another wave of chart-topping hits throughout the 70’s including “(You’re) Having My Baby,” “I Don’t Like to Sleep Alone” and “Time of Your Life.” His success held through the 80’s with “Hold Me ‘Til The Morning Comes” … a duet with Peter Cetera in 1983. Among his later releases were the 1996 Spanish-language album, Amigos and Anka Live 2000 which was recorded during a worldwide tour. He has also enjoyed an acting career having appeared in several films ... most notably in the 1962 war drama, The Longest Day in which he wrote the theme song for and received an Oscar nomination. To celebrate his 50th anniversary in music, Anka released the album, Classic Songs: My Way in 2007. The album features Anka performing his renditions of hit songs by Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel and The Killers as well as Michael Bublé joining him for “You Are My Destiny” and a duo with Bon Jovi singing “My Way.” Anka has been honoured with the prestigious Order of Canada recognizing his lifetime achievements and contributions to people in all sectors of Canadian society and is also a proud inductee to Canada’s Walk of Fame.
